EXERCISE THE BLACK DOG

Exercise the black dog

We have been doing a lot of work with people who have depression lately, and weight gain due to medication.
One in 5 women and one in 8 men will experience depression at some point in there lives.
Depressed people exercise about half as much as non depressed people this puts them into a higher risk area for other health problems.
The exercise cycle of those suffering depression looks like this

SEDENTARY LIFESTYLE

DEPRESSION
Having a sedentary lifestyle can lead to feelings of unhappiness and depression, when your depressed you don’t feel like doing anything which leads to a sedentary lifestyle  this circle needs to be broken.
The way to help do that is to add in an exercise regime. One research study compared the effects of exercise and drug therapy in treating depression in older people. The 156 depressed men and women were divided into three groups. Over 16 weeks, one group took antidepressants; the second group undertook an aerobic exercise program and the third group used both medications and exercise. Selected results include:
  • The participants in all three groups improved.
  • The participants taking antidepressants improved the fastest.
  • 68.8 per cent of participants in the combination group were no longer classified as clinically depressed after treatment.
  • 60.4 per cent of participants in the exercise group were no longer classified as clinically depressed after treatment.
  • 65.5 per cent in the medication group were no longer classified as clinically depressed after treatment.
I’m not talking about turning into a gym junkie here I’m SAYING if you can start a gradual exercise program it may make you feel better and avoid some of the health problems  associated with a sedentary lifestyle.
Start small- get up in the morning it’s a great time of year in wagga and walk to the shops
Make it fun- do something you like throw the ball with the dog, exercise doesn’t have to be a burden.
Move – exercise does not have to be in a set format or time; just get out in the garden.
Find an exercise friend- on those days when you just can’t get started a friend will help motivate you
Do it now- when your feeling depressed its easy to put things off.
Reward yourself- you’re worth it, after your walk go to a coffee shop for breakfast but make it healthy.
Do it daily- exercise can be done any time, walk up the stairs, don’t sit stand, and walk to work.
Sunshine- get out in the out doors wagga has some beautiful walking trails around town.
See us- come to flex it and we will get you started and help you to stay motivated there’s nothing to fear, who knows you may meet some new people and even change your life around.
Go easy- don’t be judgemental on your self, it may be difficult to start and there is no time frame, fitness doesn’t happen overnight how ever it will happen.
